GranuFlo (along with NaturaLyte) is a drug used to fight acute renal failure. It is used in dialysis centers across the country. Dialysis treatment is used to filter the blood used by people who suffer from various cancers and kidney disease. While GranuFlo was designed to help, patients and physicians began to notice harmful side effects. These side effects include heart attack, cardiovascular problems, stroke, and even death.
Manufactured by pharmaceutical company Fresenius, GranuFlo received FDA approval in 2003. The company itself released an internal memo in 2011 acknowledging the dangers of the drug. They didn’t release that information to the public until 2012 after investigations by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Regulatory agencies issued a class 1 recall of GranuFlo. According to the recall, the use of the product can lead to low blood pressure and cardiac arrhythmia, among many other complications.
How to Qualify For Pre-Settlement Funding on Your GranuFlo Lawsuit
Your credit history and employment status have no effect on your chances of approval. The most important things we look at are the extent of damages and if your case is part of the Fresenius settlement. In addition, the following three conditions must be met in order to qualify for funding: Granuflo lawsuit settlement loans
- You must have taken GranuFlo/NaturaLyte
- You need to have hired a lawyer
- Your lawyer must have filed a lawsuit
- Must be suffering from any of the listed side effects:
- Cardiac arrest
- Cardiovascular problems
- Lowered blood oxygen
- Increased blood carbon dioxide
Granuflo and NaturaLyte use two different ingredients which can lead to an excess of bicarbonate in the bloodstream. This is dangerous to patients. Too much bicarbonate in the blood can have severe side effects. These include:

The Lawsuit Against Fresenius: How Did It Start, and Where Is It Now? (Updated for 2016)
Fresenius first introduced Granuflo to the public in 2003. They have since become the largest dialysis drug provider in the country, servicing more than 1/3 of all patients. The first signs of potential issues surfaced in 2004, but the company did nothing to notify patients of these issues.
By 2010, a review done by the company found almost 1000 cases from their 667 clinics where patients suffered cardiac arrest during treatment. They released an internal memo to their own clinic warning of dangers but did not release it to all clinics. Despite this memo, FMC still failed to warn its patients and the public of the dangers of GranuFlo. The evidence of these activities played a huge role in proving FMC’s negligence and breach of duty of care in future lawsuits.
In 2012, a copy of this memo was leaked to the FDA, which issued a recall of Granuflo due to alkali dosing errors. Once this happened, the lawsuits started to mount up. The first ones were filed in 2012. By 2013 they had consolidated all GranuFlo and NaturaLyte cases into MDL #2428 in the US District Court in Massachusetts under US District Judge Douglas P. Woodlock. At this time there are over 4300 actions in this MDL.
The lawsuits claim that FMC:
- Intentionally withheld adverse information from non-Fresenius physicians and clinics,
- Failed to warn of the increased risk for “acute” dialysis patients,
- Misled consumers about the safety of the product in order to continue selling it,
- Displayed “a conscious disregard for the safety of the public”.
In February 2016, the German pharmaceutical company agreed to settle the claims for $250 million.
How Much is My GranuFlo/NaturaLyte Case Worth?
Even before the settlement came out this year, judgments have come down on GranuFlo cases. In 2012 the family of Teresa Gaytan won a 7-figure settlement against Fresenius after she died of a heart attack. All cases won’t settle for this, but we do know the settlement amount was $250 million. At this time there are over 4300 claims in the MDL, which is an average of almost $60,000 per settlement. Some plaintiffs may get more, others less. How much you received depends on a few factors:
- The extent of your injury
- The level of pain and mental anguish
- The cost of medical expenses
- Any lost wages you experienced
If your experiences were among the worst, you could be entitled to a greater settlement.
How long until my GranuFlo case will pay out?
This question is a bit trickier. The companies are going through each of the 4000+ cases to determine who is entitled to what. This can take months or in some cases even years. Right now the insurers of Fresenius are arguing with the company itself to determine how much each side has to pay.
The important thing is that the case is settled and money will be distributed. However, bills don’t stop piling up while you wait for your settlement to come. That is where Nova Legal Funding comes in.
