More than 2000 lawsuits have been filed against the makers of Levaquin and other FLQs. Nova Legal Funding now offers pre-settlement cash loans for your fluoroquinolones case.
The term fluoroquinolones does not refer to a specific drug. It is a type of antibiotic which is present in drugs such as Cipro, Levaquin, Avelox and many others. The main uses for such antibiotics are to treat illnesses including respiratory and bacterial infections. For years the FDA had mandated that the makers of these drugs put labels on the product warning of peripheral neuropathy. This was only accomplished more than a decade after the mandate first went out.
Worst yet, recent studies link these drugs to bulging or tearing of the aorta. Since the aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body, this may have life-threatening repercussions. Symptoms can range from feeling pins and needles, having touch sensitivity, all the way up to seizures and even death.

Cipro, Levaquin, and Avelox Class Action Lawsuit and Recall — 2016 Settlement News and Lawsuit Overview
Fluoroquinolones have long been known to have numerous issues. Some of these were tendon damage and peripheral neuropathy. However, their warning labels never made mention of the link between the drugs and the side effects. Back in the mid-90s, a group called Public Citizen tried to get warnings on the labels for these drugs. In 2003 the FDA instructed the makers to put warnings on the drugs about this. The makers of these drugs did not. In 2008, they again formally requested that a warning label be put on the drugs. Public Citizen was pushing for a black box label, the strongest warning available. Again, the drug makers did not.
In 2013, the FDA finally required a label change warning of tendon damage and peripheral neuropathy. Later, recent studies came out showing that these drugs can also case bulging or tearing of the aorta specifically. In May of this 2016 the FDA mandated that the makers include a black box label on their drugs. The warning shows that using fluoroquinolones regularly increases the risk of serious side effects.
This was too late for most people, though. In the years before proper labels were put into place, many people suffered. Sheri Kellerman filed a lawsuit against Bayer after taking Avelox and developing peripheral neuropathy. Her case is currently pending in the Northern District of California. Karyn Joy Grossman took Levaquin manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and developed peripheral neuropathy. Her case is also pending in California State Court.
Many of the cases were put into the same MDLs #1943 (for Levaquin) and MDL 2642 for all others. More than 2,000 Levaquin cases have been filed against them before U.S. District Judge John R. Tunheim in Minnesota. Many of these lawsuits were settled before trial for undisclosed amounts. Many hundreds are still active. Plaintiffs have accused the defendants of negligence, failure to warn, and even fraud.
Symptoms of ovarian cancer can be devastating. They may include:
- problems with eating
- increase in urination
- bloating and pain
- changes in the menstrual cycle
- pain during sex
- weight loss
There are several factors that will determine whether you qualify or not. However, some of the more important factors that we consider are the extent of damages and the district in which your case is being tried. We’d also need to know if your case is part of one of the MDLs. Moreover, you must meet the following conditions to qualify for a loan:
- You must have taken fluoroquinolones antibiotics
- Must be suffering from any of the listed side effects
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Tendon damage
- Aorta damage
- Other bodily injuries resulting from using Cipro, Levaquin, or Avelox
- You need to have hired a lawyer.
Once we review the documents your attorney has collected, we can determine the funding amount you’ll qualify for.
The three biggest side effects are peripheral neuropathy, tendon damage, and aorta damage. The symptoms of the first are:
- muscle weakness
- a decrease in sensation
- loss of reflexes
- inability to control muscles
- drop in blood pressure
- abnormal heart beats
For aorta bulging and tearing, the effects are even worse, as they can result in immediate death. External conditions that may also increase your chance of suffering from side effects include old age, diabetes, and being a smoker.
Most of the lawsuits are for the drugs Levaquin, Cipro, and Avelox. Other drugs fall into this category too. These include Factive, Iquix, Moxeza and Ocuflux, among others.

How Much is my Fluoroquinolones Case Worth?
One can image what it’s like going up against a major pharmaceutical company. One of the pharma companies that is being sued is Johnson & Johnson, another is Bayer. These companies make billions a year and could stretch this out for years if they wanted. However many cases have already settled for undisclosed amounts. That’s good news. Between the FDA warnings and these settlements, the defendants are aware that these suffering patients need to be paid.
How much you receive will depend on a few factors:
- how bad your injuries are
- what your treatment was
- any loss of income because of your injury
- which state/venue your case will be tried in
- if your case is part of one of the MDLs
When will fluoroquinolones cases pay out?
As mentioned above, some already have. There are still hundreds out there though, and there’s no guarantee these pharma companies will pay out any time soon. The newer injuries such as damage to the aorta may also complicate some of these settlements. On the other hand, it might force the manufacturers to pay up more quickly.
It’s safe to say there’s no exact date written in stone, especially with these cases.
