This is because of two reasons. 1) The manufacturer did not stress to doctors the dangers of using it long-term. Many doctors prescribed the drug to be taken for over a year, much more than was approved. 2) The label did not stress the risks of prolonged use. Patients didn’t realize that taking Reglan for longer periods was dangerous. Even by 2007, the FDA did a study showing a number of patients were prescribed Reglan for long-term use. The study also linked this to the bad side effect.

In 2009 the FDA required Pfizer to re-label their product with a black-box warning. This is the most severe warning. The warning advises patients about the dangers of TD after the use of Reglan and its generic counterparts.
